Pipeline bridge collapses near Thane: Two dead, 11 injured

October 23, 2009

Two people have died and 11 others were injured when a portion of a water pipeline underneath a pedestrian bridge collapsed on a local train on the suburban Mulund-Thane route on Friday, reports PTI.

Meanwhile, railway minister Mamata Banerjee has announced compensation packages for those affected in the mishap. The compensation announced includes Rs5 lakh for the next of kin of the dead, Rs1 lakh for the seriously injured and Rs 10,000 for people with minor injuries.

The mishap took place when a part of the under construction Kopri water pipeline bridge fell on a Kalyan-bound train around at 1030 hours, police said.

One person died in the incident while three persons of the 11 injured are in critical condition and have been admitted to a nearby hospital, police said.

Rail services on the Central line were disrupted due to the incident, crippling trains between suburban Kurla and Thane, inconveniencing commuters.

Police, fire brigade officials and rail personnel have reached the spot to take stock of the situation and rescue operations are on.

Television images showed the water gushing out of the pipeline atop the train as fire-fighters rescued passengers trapped inside.

All services on the busy suburban route were suspended indefinitely following the accident, railway officials said.
