Reliance discovers oil in Cambay basin

November 10, 2009

India’s largest petrochemical company Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) said it discovered oil in the onland exploratory block in the Cambay basin, located 130km from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

The blocks were awarded to the company under the NELP-IV round of exploration bidding. RIL drilled five wells in the block and found oil in the fifth well (CB10A-A1).

It said the discovery, named as ‘Dhirubhai-43’, has been notified by the government and commerciality of the discovery is being ascertained through data-gathering and analysis.

Initially, RIL has received 500 barrels per day through a 6 mm pipe with a pressure rating of 360 pounds per square inch (psi). The company has found the oil at normal depth of 1,451 metres.

However, the pressure rating of 360 psi is still low and does not indicate major output in this area. If the present flow continues, then the discovery will meet only drilling expenses and may not contribute to revenue substantially.
